The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China, usually falling in late January or early February according to the lunar calendar. It marks the beginning of a new year and a time for family reunion.

Before the festival, people clean their houses to sweep away bad luck and decorate with red couplets, paper cuttings and lanterns. On New Year's Eve, families gather for a big reunion dinner, enjoying dishes like dumplings and fish, which symbolize wealth and good fortune. After dinner, people watch the Spring Festival Gala and stay up late, a custom called “shousui”.

During the festival, people visit relatives and friends to send best wishes. Children receive red envelopes with money from elders, representing good luck and blessings. Many traditional activities are held, such as dragon and lion dances, setting off firecrackers, temple fairs and folk performances.

The Spring Festival carries the Chinese values of family, harmony and hope. It is not only a celebration but also an important part of Chinese culture that has been passed down for thousands of years.
